Aloe Vera Spray Dried Powder 200X – Certified Organic - is a highly concentrated and cost effective version of Aloe Vera Liquid.

The gel of the Aloe Vera plant is legendary for its unique properties to soothe and moisturize dry, irritated or damaged skin.

Aloe Vera Spray Dried Powder 200X Organic is excellent for use in O.T.C pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and toiletries. These products can include creams, lotions, toners, and other skin care or hair care products.

Processing for Aloe Vera Spray Dried Powder 200X Certified Organic begins with freshly harvested leaves of the Aloe Vera Barbadensis Miller variety of Aloe. The inner gel (fillet) is carefully removed to minimize disruption of the Aloin layer. The gel is then further processed to remove the pulp and fiber. The resultant gel is pasteurized to maintain its efficacy. The gel is then concentrated utilizing low temperature evaporation to produce a liquid concentrate ready for spray drying. The gel remains under refrigeration until dried. The gel concentrate is spray dried without the use of a matrix, nor the addition of preservatives or other additives.

AquaEm will function as a solubilizer and emollient in aqueous systems to create a *clear product with a silky feel! It's ideal for products such as body mist or leave-in hair conditioners. Argan Oil has demonstrated antiaging characteristics and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This nourishing oil can improve skin elasticity and overall vitality. Argan Oil is light and easily absorbed and will leave skin soft and supple and moisturized.

Argan Oil contains 80% unsaturated fatty acids and is exceptionally rich in natural tocopherols, phenols, phenolic acid and carotenes. This natural oil is recommended for use in both skin care and hair care. Applications include creams, lotions, serums, conditioners, and massage oils. The recommended usage rate is 1%-5% by weight of the formulation.

Argan Oil is extracted using traditional cold press technique. Shelf-life should be approximately one to two years if stored away from light and heat and kept cool (15C/59F – 25C/77F).

Arnica Flower has traditionally been used for external treatment of rheumatism, muscle and joint problems.

Arnica Flower CO2 Extract is standardized to 1.0% Sesquiterpene lactones in pure, High Oleic Sunflower Seed Oil. It also contains triterpenediol esters, essential oils, waxes and resins and 1.0% Antioxidant Rosemary Extract.

Arnica Flower CO2 was extracted by pure and environmentally friendly supercritical fluid (natural Carbon Dioxide) extraction technique.

Due to poor yields in recent years, arnica crop pricing has increased.  We hope to see better pricing in the future when the supply chain improves.

Artemisia Hydrosol is the aromatic water obtained by distillation of Artemisia ludoviciana known by common names such as White Sage and Owyhee.

Artemesia is named after Artemis Goddess of the Moon, Nature and all wild things. Artemisia is loved for her spiritual associations as well as her aromatic characteristics. Artemisia ludoviciana has been used traditionally as a ceremonial plant, for medicine, and for skin care.

Our aromatic Artemisia Hydrosol can be used in soothing and cooling skin care applications and also for aromatherapy. We use Artemisia Hydrosol as a refreshing, yet soothing facial mist. Artemisia Hydrosol can be combined with other hydrosols or used alone. It can also be used as the water phase in skin care and hair care formulations.

Our lovely grey Artemisia plants are tenacious in almost all situations. We honor their tenacity and appreciate the aromatic waters they give us. Artemisia ludoviciana is grown without the use of pesticides.

While the traditional use of oats in folklore is well-established and has stood the test of time, modern science has documented excellent efficacy as well. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated the benefits of oats and oat derivatives in skin care products.

Avena Oat Extract WS is derived from the entire oatstraw herb which includes the green stalks, the leaves and the milky grain. Constituents include polysaccharides such as beta glucan, flavonoids, silica, triterpenoid saponins (including avenacosides), and phenolic compounds (avenanthramides).

These constituents are known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-irritant, and moisturizing characteristics. When used topically, Avena sativa can soothe, smooth, and nourish skin and hair.

Avocado Oil is a natural, cold pressed oil obtained from the fruit of the avocado (Persea gratissima). This oil is rich in vitamins and minerals and is recommended for dry and dehydrated skin, mature skin and sensitive skin. Avocado Oil is useful in hair care and can be used to conditioned and add shine to hair.

Avocado Oil can be used in lotions, creams, balms, massage oils, lip balms, hair conditioners and other personal care products.

Beeswax Pastilles are used in many personal care products, including creams, lotions, soaps, salves, balms, lipsticks, and scrubs. Beeswax can be used with other waxes or by itself. Our Beeswax Pastilles are a natural off white to yellow with a lovely honey scent.

Creams and lotions made with BTMS Conditioning Emulsifier leave a soft, powdery feel on the skin. Because BTMS Conditioning Emulsifier is substantive to hair, it imparts excellent body and spring and improves wet combing. Due to its extreme mildness, it is suitable for leave-in conditioners. BTMS can be used as sole emulsification system in creams, lotions or hair conditioners. BTMS can also emulsify many silicones (up to 50% in a formulation).

In cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, Calendula CO2 Extract - Standardized can be used in formulas for inflammation, burns, bruising and dry skin. Research data support the significant anti-inflammatory effect of Faradiol esters. We recommend using 0.31% - 1.0% in products such as lotions, creams, sun lotions, and salves.

Curcuma Xanthorrhiza CO2 Extract

Curcuma Xanthorrhiza grows in Southeast Asia and is a member of the Zingiberaceae (ginger family). This beautiful plant is sometimes referred to as Javanese Turmeric or temu lawak. The rhizome and root of this plant contain beneficial constituents that have been used traditionally in the treatment of acne and skin inflammations as Thai traditional medicine. More recently studies have demonstrated antioxidative, detoxifying and anticarcinogenic characteristics. Several studies have also demonstrated antimicrobial efficacy, expecially against staphylococcus mutans.

Our Curcuma Xanthorrhiza CO2 Extract contains all lipohilic components extracted from the root of Curcuma Xanthorrhiza using pure and environmentally friendly supercritical fluid (natural Carbon Dioxide) extraction technique. Glucono Delta Lactone is characterized as a carbohydrate, but functions as a food grade acidulant and chelating agent. The unique characteristcs are due to lactone formation. In an aqueous solution there is an equilibrium between gluconic acid and the delta and gamma lactones. This change in molecular form contributes to its unique function. Due to its slow hydrolysis to gluconic acid (which takes place gradually over the forty to sixty minutes after dissolution), it provides a gradual, progressive and continuous decrease of pH to equilibrium.

The functionality of Glucono-Delta-Lactone (GDL) to help prevent microbial growth is primarily due to the decrease in pH and the ability to chelate. In addition, the multiple hydroxyl groups on the GDL molecule can attract water and perhaps limit water activity. This unique functionality can also provide a moisturizing effect when it is utilized in hair or skin care formulations. When combined with a plant based, broad spectrum antimicrobial such as Leucidal Liquid, it can enhance the antimicrobial activity in the finished product.

Homeostatine® combines two botanicals into a novel skin care complex. This unique complex is derived from the seeds of the Andean tree Caesalpinia spinosa and the algae known as Enteromorpha compressa. Homeostatine activity is due to the combined action of galactomannan from Caesalpinia spinosa and marine pentasaccharide (MPS) from Enteromorpha compressa.

Within this novel hydro-colloidal three-dimensional matrix, these two components function at two different levels. Galactomannans are high molecular weight polysaccharides with natural hydrating functions. The hydrocolloid, galactomannan structure provides the moisturizing matrix and maintains contact with the stratum corneum for the release of the MPS. The MPS molecules are very small and can penetrate the epidermis to promote the synthesis of collagen and function as metabolism mediators within the dermis. The major constituents in Lonicera japonica are Flavonoids, Triterpenoid Saponins and Tannins. One source reports 27 and 30 monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids were identified from the essential oil of the dry flower and fresh flower respectively.

There are different grades of HEC with varying formulation requirements. The Herbarie's Hydroxethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a free-flowing, extremely easy to use, granular powder that easily disperses into room temperature water without clumping or forming “fish-eyes”. We are currently the only distributor for this particular Hydroxyethcellose (HEC) product, therefore other HEC products will likely require different formulation technique and procedures.

Hydroxethyl Cellulose (HEC) has an exceptional skin feel and is the perfect ingredient to make crystal clear serums for water soluble active ingredients. Formulating Guidelines
-pH: Effective at acidic pH - most effective at pH less than 5.0

Since our Mountain Mint Hydrosol contains a significant amount of essential oil we do not recommend using directly on skin. We recommend using 5% - 50% in most skin care or hair care formulations.

Mountain Mint Hydrosol can be blended with other hydrosols such as Melissa Hydrosol or Spearmint Hydrosol for a cooling facial or body mist.

Mountain Mint Hydrosol also combines well with our Catnip Hydrosol. We use these two hydrosols as a base for our Natural Insect Repellent. Directions:
1) Combine the following essential oils in equal parts: Geranium, Lavender, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Rosemary, and Cedarwood virginiana.
2) Combine this essential oil blend with AquaEm.
For application to skin, use 0.5% - 2%.
For application to socks/clothing, use 2%-5%.
3) Add Catnip Hydrosol/Mountain Mint Hydrosol (1/1 ratio) mix well and package in a spritzer bottle to make a very effective natural insect repellent.
Avoid eyes and sensitive skin.

Natural Synergy Preservative System is biodegradable and from non-GMO vegetable sources.

Caprylhydroxamic acid is active at low, neutral, or high pH which allows for flexibility in formulating a wide range of cosmetic products and is most active against yeast and mold. Caprylhydroxamic acid is water soluble.

Glyceryl Caprylate is a multi-functional, high purity monoester of glycerin and caprylic acid that combines excellent skin compatibility with remarkable effects against microorganisms and is most active against bacteria. Glyceryl Caprylate is not water soluble.

Please note that every personal care formulation requires a preservative system that meets its specific needs. Each formulation should be created with the preservative system as part of the formulation, rather than adding a preservative as an afterthought. Using natural antimicrobials for cosmetic preservation requires careful planning and much testing. Therefore, we recommend that every newly developed formulation should undergo microbial testing to ensure adequate preservation.

Formulating Guidelines:
- Optiphen is suitable for anhydrous formulations and emulsions, such as creams, lotions, salves, body butters, and body scrubs.
- Optiphen is not heat sensitive and can be added directly to the formulation with heat. However, Optiphen can destabilize some emulsions so for most emulsions, we recommend that Optiphen be added during POST-emulsification at or below 37.7°C (100°F).
- There are no pH restrictions and it is compatible with most raw materials.
- Optiphen is not very water soluble and is therefor NOT recommended for all water products. For all water products or high surfactant-based sytems, such as toners or floral waters or shampoo or body wash, we recommend Optiphen ND.

INCI Name: Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol

Recommended Use Levels: 0.5% - 1.5%

Optiphen ND is paraben free and does not contain formaldehyde releasers. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and mold. The pH of finished formulations should be 6 or below for effective utilization of this preservative. Optiphen ND is approved for use worldwide.

Passionfruit Oil is a lovely nourishing oil from Passiflora edulis which is native to tropical and semi-tropical regions. Its common names include Passion Fruit or Passionfruit (English), Maracuyá or Parcha (Spanish), Grenadille or fruit de la passion (French), and Maracujá (Portuguese). It is cultivated commercially in tropical and subtropical areas for its sweet, seedy fruit. The passion fruit is a pepo, a type of berry, round to oval, either yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm, juicy interior filled with numerous seeds. The Herbarie Passionfruit Oil contains high levels of essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Passionfruit oil is quickly absorbed into skin leaving a conditioned, non-greasy feel.

Patchouli Hydrosol is obtained from the leaves of Pogostemon patchouli, a tender perennial shrub grown in sub-tropic and tropic regions. Patchouli herb has been used traditionally for dry skin, acne, eczema and in aromatherapy.

The rich, sweet-earthy fragrance of the hydrosol is a much softer version of the deep, earthy scent of the essential oil. The hydrosol can be used in aromatherapy for stress related conditions, sexual dysfunction and nervous exhaustion. Patchouli Hydrosol can also be used alone or in formulations.

pH Indicator Strips offer an approximate pH measurement from pH 0 - pH 14. These non-bleeding, ColorpHast strips are recommended for measurement of the pH of weakly buffered or strongly alkaline solutions. Our Rose Geranium spends the entire summer in our secret garden just outside my lab window. It thrives in the warmth of the sun and deeply composted soil. Since Rose Geranium is one of my favorite aromatic plants, I placed my garden bench near it so I could enjoy the fragrance whenever I had a chance to sit down! We can harvest twice each summer and have just completed our first distillation this year. Rose Geranium is a tender perennial and won't overwinter here without protection. Usnea Lichen CO2 Extract

Usnea Lichen CO2 Extract (4% Usnic Acids) is obtained from Usnea Barbata using pure and environmentally friendly supercritical fluid (natural Carbon Dioxide) extraction technique. Therefore, Usnea Lichen CO2 Extract contains no solvent residues, no inorganic salts, and no heavy metals.

Usnea Lichen CO2 Extract contains antimicrobial usnic acids 3.8% - 4.2% analyzed with usnic acid as a standard, sunflower seed oil (organic) and a mixture of natural source emulsifiers. These emulsifiers are based on renewable resources and are completely biodegradable, non-toxic and PEG-free.

The antimicrobial activity of usnic acid has been widely documented in the literature against gram positive Staphylococcus and Streptococcus and the fungi Trichophyton and Candida and also against gram negative bacteria.

Multifunctional Usnea Lichen CO2 Extract has demonstrated both antimicrobial efficacy and anti-inflammatory characteristics.

Additional testing has demonstrated particular efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aerugenosa, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The highest efficacy was with Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa followed by Candida albicans, Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger.

Other testing has demonstrated potent antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, Corynegacterium pseudodiphtericum and pityrosporon ovale. These bacteria and yeast are typically associated with dermatological problems.

Usnea Lichen CO2 Extract can be used in lotions and creams for skin care benefits and as part of a preservative system.

Physical Form: Yellow-light green, water dispersible liquid at room temperature. The colour can change from light-green to yellow during storage because of decomposition of chlorophyll traces. This colour change has no effect on the quality and efficiency of the product.

Please note that every personal care formulation requires a preservative system that meets its specific needs. Each formulation should be created with the preservative system as part of the formulation, rather than adding a preservative as an afterthought. Using natural antimicrobials for cosmetic preservation requires careful planning and much testing. Therefore, we recommend that every newly developed formulation should undergo microbial testing to ensure adequate preservation.

Numerous studies have documented the effectiveness of l-ascorbic acid as both an antioxidant and anti-aging ingredient for skin care. Unfortunately l-ascorbic acid is not stable and will oxidize very quickly – within hours - once put into solution. The oxidation of l-Ascorbic Acid can actually be detrimental to skin health. This makes l-ascorbic acid a poor choice for most skin care products.

When compared to l-ascorbic acid and other vitamin C derivatives, VitaC Stable (AAP) demonstrated superior benefits for skin care. VitaC Stable (AAP) serves as an excellent antioxidant, helps to promote the biosynthesis of collagen, and also helps to lighten/brighten skin by *inhibiting the production of melanin which causes hyperpigmentation or age spots.

Studies have demonstrated a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and hyperpigmentation after as little as two months. VitaC Stable (AAP) is non-irritating and non-toxic when used as directed (0.1% - 1.0%). VitaC Stable (AAP) is an off-white powder that is easily soluble in water and very stable over time. This superior stability along with superb functionality, makes VitaC Stable (AAP) one of the most important anti-aging active ingredients.

- Very Stable: a 1% solution at 50C for 30 days shows no discoloration. Use of disodium EDTA or tetrasodium EDTA can offer extra protection against oxidation.

*Melanin helps protect our skin from UVA/UVB rays. By inhibiting the production of melanin our skin is more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun. We recommend UVA/UVB protection (sunscreen) as an important part of every effective antiaging regimen. Wasabi Extract is obtained from the roots of the Wasabia japonica plant that is indigenous to Japan. Wasabi Extract is a multifunctional active ingredient that demonstrates powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial characteristics. These characteristics are beneficial for both skin and hair care. Wasabi Extract also demonstrates skin soothing characteristics.

Wasabi Extract is for topical use only.

The three primary types of compounds found in Wasabia japonica are: Oxido-reductases, isocyanates and glucosinolates. Of particular interest are the Peroxidases, Superoxide Dismutase and Sinigrin (allyl isothiocyanate).

Superoxide dismutase in conjunction with peroxidase is responsible for the scavenging and neutralization of both the Superoxide and Peroxide radicals which contribute to premature aging. Results from in vitro studies have demonstrated that Sinigrin (allyl glucosinolate) directly inhibits oxidative reactions in DNA. Allyl Isothiocyanate also demonstrates antimicrobial characteristics that can be useful in formulations.

Wild Carrot Seed Hydrosol (Daucus carota) is excellent for all skin types, but is especially recommended for sensitive skin or mature skin. Suzanne Catty says Wild Carrot Seed Hydrosol soothes eczema, psoriasis, inflammation, and promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells. Some sources report reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

Daucus carota is commonly called Queen Anne's Lace. Daucus carota is a biennial plant – growing from seed the first year and blooming the second year. Queen Anne's Lace reseeds every year and grows beautifully and happily in our gardens. The delicate, umbrella shaped blooms are actually comprised of hundreds of tiny, white flowers with one dark red flower in the center. Legend suggests Daucus carota is called Queen Anne's Lace because the delicate flower cluster resembles lace and the red flower in the center represents a blood droplet where Queen Anne pricked herself with a needle when she was making the lace. We harvest Daucus carota when the flower cluster matures and “turns to seed”. The Herbarie's Wild Carrot Seed Hydrosol is distilled from the seed heads and flowers of this beautiful plant.

Wild Carrot Seed Hydrosol has a mild, earthy, carrot scent and is recommended for use in body spray/splash, the water portion in lotions and creams, antiaging products, anti-inflammatory products, and facial toners.

The Herbarie's Willow Bark Extract is standardized to 10% Salicylic Acid. Salicylic Acid is used to renew skin, treat acne and other skin disorders. Willowbark Extract's natural salicylates will enhance skin cell renewal without irritation.

Willow Bark Extract has also demonstrated antimicrobial activity in formulation challenge studies. When used from 2.5 – 5.0%, the extract contributed preservative efficacy to the formulas, thereby contributing to the overall microbiological integrity of the finished product.

Willow Bark Extract is recommended for balancing and toning most skin types. It can be particularly useful in anti-aging formulas and formulas for acne or other skin disorders.

We recommend the use of a pH meter when formulating to ensure the finished product pH is no lower than 3.5 - 4.

Avoid UVA/UVB exposure when using products that contain AHAs or BHAs.

The Herbarie's XanThix is an excellent natural source choice for stabilizing and building viscosity in creams and lotions.
